Almost Perfect
Well the New England Patriots fell a little short in their bid for a perfect 19-0 season by giving up a seriously late touchdown to the New York Giants. The game was 3 quarters of nothing special and then the fourth quarter both teams were swinging like heavyweights...in a lady's boxing match. I was hoping for the Pats to win but they just couldn't get over that proverbial hump and control the game. What made it worse is that the commercials were complete crap. Sure there were a couple that were decent but nothing that made me drop with laughter. The best commercial is debatable, of course, but being an American male I have to give the Victoria's Secret hottie with a football my vote. Ok, probably not the best one to air Sunday night, but that's just how weak the competition was!
The game itself has gotten bigger than what the NFL can handle. Last year the Colts beat the Bears in a laughable game and this year they were relatively saved by an incredible last nine minutes. The story of the game was the Giants defensive line and linebackers. They pretty much got to Tom Brady at will, forcing him to make throws that Joey Harrington made famous in Detroit...but without the pressure. Strahan and Co. were all over Brady and the linebackers were free to blitz at will because of the coverage downfield, which caused bad throws from one of the greatest 'Big Game' quarterbacks in NFL history. Of course tonight little Eli Manning made a name for himself by playing well enough to out-dual Tom Terrific. The one flaw Eli had wasn't even his fault, as the New England corner grabbed a tipped ball. Suure the pass could have been placed better but the balls used in Super Bowls aren't seasoned like regular season game balls are, they don't get tacky enough for quarterbacks to make the throws they did during the regular season, so there are bound to be throws that sail or come out wobbly.
But all the credit needs to go to the Giants defense. That group came up huge on the biggest stage in sports and held the Pats in check all game. Take this for what you will because I have never been a Giants fan, never liked them, and still don't but I know a great performance when I see one and the Giants coaching staff prepared their defense remarkably well. And we still have to put up with the '72 Dolphins, but what's worse is we now have to listen to people drool about Eli Manning and how he is the next great thing to happen to mankind. Oh well, at least Amani Toomer has a Super Bowl ring, it's always nice to see Michigan guys win championships.
