Perhaps Bill Martin learned something after the first disastrous weeks of his search to replace his beloved Lloyd Carr as Michigan's Head Football Coach. First he tried to be the honorable man and ask permission to speak to Les Miles and took it a step further by agreeing to wait until after the SEC Championship Game, which gave LSU time to offer Miles an extension worth an additional million dollars for one more year. The $1.25 million buyout was not changed, sparking rumors and speculation that Miles was still a candidate for the Michigan job. That is until Miles issued a statement saying that he was not a candidate. Then Bill Martin meets with Rutgers coach Greg Schiano and they apparently had a nice 5 hour conversation in New York. Depending on who you believe, Schiano was or wasn't offered the job for $2.2 million per year. Also depending on who you believe, Schiano pondered the alleged offer deep into the night before calling a team meeting for 7am. As it turns out Schiano pulled his name from consideration and stated that he is a Jersey Guy and is going to stay in the land of Springsteen. Great, now we're 0-2 in our alleged offers to coaches that already have a job.
Today we have nothing new except some people trying to stir the pot with names such as Glen Mason, Chris Peterson, Brian Kelly, and the guy at Mt. Union. Seriously. The fact of the matter is that we don't know what direction Gilligan Martin is headed, and that is the most maddening thing in this search. Some people are still holding out hope that Les Miles is going to end up in Ann Arbor and that all the press conferences and statements are just smoke to keep the LSU team focused on the game against the idiots from Ohio. But what I think is that Martin and U-M are just not as on top of things as they should be. Martin should have hired an outside company to help him with his first big-time coaching hire. Don't give me that crap about the basketball hire because Michigan is a football school. Martin was more interested in sailing with a big donor in Florida than answering his damn phone when Les Miles' agent called. There are some things that an athletic director must be able to do, and having a background in business one would think that Martin would know the art of multi-tasking or, at the very least, the ability to answer the damn phone.
