Lions Slam Denver
44-7. The Lions unleashed a defense that played pissed off and turned into a defense that made Mike Shanahan's offense look like a joke. The Lions have been on the losing side of scores like this for so long that today's romp over Denver was almost like 16 years of pent up frustration and ineptitude being released on the hapless Broncos. To say that the Lions turned the Broncos into glue would be a great understatement because it wasn't that close. Sure Denver broke up the shutout, but who cares? The Lions are 6-2 for the first time in 8 years and the difference between '99 and this year is that this team is actually a team. They got blown out on the road twice this year to two teams that are traditional powers, but they returned the favor to a two-time Super Bowl winning coach today. The difference is the attitude. Rod Marinelli has this group of guys playing hard and together. This was the statement win that the Lions were waiting to unleash on an opponent since Matt Millen has been here. But there are too many people that are still down on the Lions, even at 6-2. To these people I say shut up. The Lions are 6-2 and playing well, enjoy it! The Tigers were crap for a long time and out of nowhere they make it to the World Series, the Lions are playing well after too many years of being crap. I like the tone and attitude this team exhibits in the wins and in the losses, mainly because the message is the same..."This team is different." Yes this team is different because they have bought into Marinelli and his system of all out effort all the time. I am not waiting for the Lions to go Sparty and fold, I am enjoying this run of success and supporting this team.
A tv reporter in Detroit was on the Sparty sideline during the Michigan game and he reported that players were celebrating a victory with a 10 point lead and seven minutes left. He heard some of them yelling "Remember this moment. Remember this because this is the time we beat Michigan." Ooops. That is where Dantonio has his work cut out for him, teaching Sparty class and tact. I bet when the Colts were up 10 on the Pats today that they weren't yelling that they were going to beat them. The old cliche' says that you shouldn't count your eggs before they hatch, don't chalk up the win when there is enough time to score two touchdowns. Was I nervous that Michigan wasn't going to make it out of Lansing with a win? Absolutely. Sparty turned it on in the second half, but they forgot about the heart that Henne and the other players have. But then again, that is what makes Sparty what they are. At least they aren't Notre Dame and mired in the worst season in their history. That story is bigger than any other in the last 20 years of college football.
