Coaching Circus and Thanksgiving Upsets
This is a truly great time of year, except for the fact that it is getting damn cold out. All the football being played is great in itself but when you factor in that every game being played has major implications on each teams season, it just makes it that much better because so much is on the line. The Lions are scrapping for a wild card spot, the national championship picture is completely blown up right now and the Michigan High School Football Championships began today at Ford Field. Congratulations to Detroit Martin Luther King High School for their becoming the first ever Detroit Public School to win a State Championship. It looked dicey early against Midland, but King came back from a 21-7 hole to lay down a 40 unanswered point ass beating on the Chemics.
The Lions are in every game as of late, but they just can't seem to get the bounces or the defensive stops to push them closer to the playoffs. I am hoping that they can put these last 3 losses behind them and re-focus on playing basic football and make that playoff push. Winning the division isn't likely so they will have to put their energy on the wild card, but the problem their is that they need to almost run the table to stay ahead of Philly, Arizona, Washington, and the schedule isn't looking favorable. I just hope that this team doesn't fall into that mold of late-season Lions collapses.
Michigan is searching for a new coach and the hottest name has been Les Miles of Louisiana State. Other names I have heard are Jon Gruden of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Jeff Tedford of California, Brian Kelly of Cincinnati, Jim Grobe of Wake Forest, and Michigan's current coordinators Mike DeBord and Ron English.
For the love of all that is holy, I don't want Gruden, Grobe, Kelly, or Tedford. I especially don't want DeBord, for no other reason than what his offense has accomplished since his return to Michigan is DeBoring as hell. He left Michigan to cut his teeth as a head coach, at Central Michigan, but went down in flames and tried to spin that in a recent interview in the Detroit News. DeBord claims that the framework was laid out and that he was the reason Brian Kelly was able to win there. Puuuuhhhleeeeease. I'm sure Mike DeBord is a nice guy and a decent coach as a coordinator, but he didn't do anything special this year with what was touted as one of the most loaded offenses in the country. Just because we saw it so much this year and are sure to get more of it in the "Whatever Crappy Ass Bowl", I think I might just pull someones arms out of their sockets if I see more off-tackle left behind Jake Long. Last year in the Rose Bowl, USC players and coaches said it was an easy win because they knew what was coming. That falls squarely on Mike DeBord, and I don't want predictability running Michigan. Ron English is a feisty coach with loads of enthusiasm and fire, but can he be a good head coach? No one knows because he has never been a head coach anywhere before. I don't want to turn this team over to someone that has no head coaching experience at any level.
Gruden is not a personality for college, leave him in Tampa. Grobe had a Cinderella year last year but he has never shown that he can win year-in and year-out. Tedford is an interesting choice because he hasn't been able to put together teams that can win big games on even a sort-of-regular basis. Brian Kelly had success at Grand Valley State and steered Central to a decent year last year before he bolted for Cincy. He runs a gimmicky offense and a defense that seems to be a bit gimmicky too. The only name that makes any sense is Les Miles. And for the love of god, don't even mention Dennis Franchione. But Miles is the name being talked about most because he went to Michigan, played for Michigan, was an assistant under Bo, and has made no secret about his love for Michigan or his dream to be the head coach at Michigan. Even LSU's Athletic Director expects Miles to get a call from Michigan and that Miles would bolt for Ann Arbor, even though he said that he would still want Miles to coach the team in their bowl game. Another name that is surfacing is Kirk Ferentz of Iowa. Please no. Ferentz hasn't done anything worth talking about, has kids that are constantly getting into legal trouble, and for some reason has to keep negating rumors of NFL possibilities. But there isn't any reason for the Royal Oak native to come home, keep him in the land of corn.
Mark Dantonio is the head coach, or head job, at MSU. He got into a little war of words with Michigan senior running back Mike Hart. Leading up to the Michigan Agricultural College-Michigan game Mike Hart answered a question about MSU being referred to as Michigan's little brother, and he said that yeah, he agreed that if MSU felt that way, he did too. After Michigan came back and beat MSU, some of the Michigan players gathered at the middle of the field and had a moment of silence. Dantonio was pretty upset about that, calling Michigan class-less and that they need to check themselves. Um, Coach, were you not the one that said "There should be a moment of silence for Michigan's loss to Appalachian St."? And then you go and make a crack about Mike Hart's stature? What are you, in 4th grade in a 'yo momma' contest? People can talk all they want about Hart talking and how he should keep his mouth shut, but the coach of another Big Ten school, an in-state rival needs to act his age and not get into a war of words with another team's player. Worry about your team losing almost every game in conference play, worry about recruiting quality kids that don't do stupid things and get arrested. The next time Michigan plays Moo-U, I can bet there will be plenty of mention of Dantonio's inability to keep his emotions and his players in the big games.
